Tiit Härm - Premier Maître de ballet

Estonian choreographer TIIT HÄRM was educated at the Tallinn State Ballet School (1957-1961), St. Petersburg Vaganova Ballet Academy (1961-1966) and Moscow Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (former GITIS) with Prof. Rostislav Zakharov (1978-1985).

The Principal soloist of the Estonian National Opera Ballet Company (1971-1990) where he danced the main male roles in the classical ballets and choreographies by the 20th century Estonian choreographers. In 1967, Tiit Härm founded the "Young Ballet" ensemble in Moscow where he was a soloist till 1971. As guest soloist, he has performed at the Bolshoi Theatre and Mariinsky Theatre (1971-1990), and during all his career he has participated in various international tours and gala evenings in more than 70 different countries. He has performed the principal roles in ballet films and other movies. In the 80th of the 20th century he started to stage his own choreographies.

Since 1989, Tiit Härm has worked as Guest Ballet Master at Scottish National Ballet, Wiener Staatsballett, Volksoper Wien, Göteborg Opera, Finnish National Opera, Bayerisches Staatsballett, Arena di Verona, Aterballetto, Reggio Emilia, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, English National Ballet, Deutsche Opera am Rhein.

As guest choreographer, he has worked with Latvian National Opera, Grand Theatre de Bordeaux, Slovenian National Theatre Maribor, Teatro alla Scala, Scottish National Ballet, Göteborg Opera and Stora Teatern in Gothenburg.

He was the Ballet Director of the Estonian National Opera (1990-1992), the ballet master and professor at Teatro alla Scala and La Scala Ballet School (1992-1994, 1997-1999), Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and Scuola di danza del Teatro dell'Opera (1995-1997) and the Artistic Director of the Estonian National Opera Ballet (2001-2009).

In 2009, the Estonian Theatre Union presented to Tiit Härm the Rahel Olbrei Award with the following dedication: “To the Chief Choreographer who has gathered on the stage of the Estonia Theatre the works of very diverse stage directors, each with unique choreography that both broadened the dancers’ theatrical character and raised the professional level of the ballet company.

Tiit Härm has been a consummate, strong-willed, sensual and charismatic premier danseur of the Estonian ballet. His roles in the ballets “The Wonderful Mandarin”, “Joanna Tentata”, “Daphnis and Chloe”, “Anthony and Cleopatra”, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Prometheus”, staged in the Estonia Theatre were epoch-making. Many cultural and state awards have been bestowed on Tiit Härm for his creative work.

From 2001 until 2009, Tiit Härm led the Estonian National Ballet, being its artistic director. In this period he staged for the ballet company of the Estonia Theatre such ballets as “Swan Lake” by P.Tchaikovsky, “Romeo and Juliet” by S.Prokofiev, “The Lady of the Camellias” to the music by F.Liszt, “Don Quixote” by L.Minkus, one act ballets “La valse” and “The Bolero” by Ravel, “Pelléas ja Mélisande” by A.Schönberg.

He had brought about a number of changes in the theatre, which allowed the ballet company of the theatre to move to a new, higher level of performance quality and the boost of its image. He had started introducing the Estonia Theatre to the international stage. The company made guest appearances in Sweden, Finland, Russia, England, Latvia and Ukraine. At that time, also the following famous foreign choreographers were invited to work in the theatre: Mauro Bigonzetti, Attila Egerhazi, Jorma Elo, Youri Vàmos, Luciano Cannito, Frank Andersen, Gyula Harangozó, David Nixon, Nils Christe, and Uwe Scholz.
During the directorship of Tiit Härm young Estonian choreographers were given the opportunity to staged their productions for the stage of the Estonia Theatre.
Tiit Härm has been an active member of the jury at various international ballet competitions.

In 1990–1991 Tiit Härm was the artistic director of the ballet company of the Estonia National Opera. During this period he created his stage production of Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” in 1990 and a new version of Adam’s “Giselle”. Was invited to the famous swedish choreographer Birgit Cullberg for ballet "Miss Julia" of A.Rangstrem.
